Advice for Businesses Migrating Before the PSTN / ISDN Switch Off

Advice for Businesses Migrating Before the PSTN / ISDN Switch Off

The digital landscape of the UK is undergoing its most significant infrastructure shift in decades. By January 2027, the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) will be switched off permanently.

Most businesses who have yet to migrate will be making plans for their migration. At Red Rose Technologies, we advise businesses not to view this as a simple box-ticking exercise, but as a critical opportunity to modernise their infrastructure.

Here is our advice for navigating the migration.

1. Understand the Scope: It’s Not Just About Phones

The biggest misconception about the switch off is that it only affects your desk phones. Because PSTN relies on copper wire circuit-switched lines, it has historically powered a myriad of other essential business functions.

If you simply upgrade your phone system but ignore the rest of your building’s infrastructure, you risk critical failures. You must audit your estate for the following analogue-dependent technologies:

  • Security & Access: Building alarms, CCTV systems, and door entry systems.
  • Safety Systems: Elevator assist lines and emergency pull cords.
  • Operations: Fax machines, Electric Point of Sale (EPOS) terminals, and telemetry/remote monitoring systems.

Advice: Conduct a full site audit immediately. A “blackout” in your lift emergency line or security alarm is a risk you cannot afford.

2. The Move to Cloud: OpEx vs CapEx

Migrating from ISDN to IP (Internet Protocol) or VoIP (Voice over IP) isn’t just a technical necessity; it’s a financial shift.

Traditional ISDN setups often required heavy upfront investment in on-premise hardware (CapEx). Modern cloud telephony operates on an OpEx (Operating Expense) model. Solutions are typically billed monthly on a license-by-license basis.

Advice: Understand what this change means for your yearly budgets and plan accordingly.

3. Don’t Wait

A common hesitation we hear is, “Is the cloud reliable enough yet?”

The answer is yes. Modern cloud offerings frequently come with 99.999% uptime SLAs. Unlike aging copper lines which are prone to degradation and weather interference, IP connections offer clearer voice quality and faster data transmission.

Furthermore, leaving your migration late is dangerous. As the deadline approaches, engineer availability will plummet, and prices for last-minute “panic” migrations may soar.

Advice: acting now prevents operational risk. A typical migration project for a small business takes around 12 weeks from discovery to handover. By starting early, you ensure you have the time to train staff and test systems without the pressure of a looming cut-off date.

4. Addressing the “Downtime” Fear

Many businesses fear that switching networks will leave them offline for days. In reality, a well-managed migration involves minimal downtime.

A typical migration sets up the new cloud technology alongside your current service. You continue to use your ISDN lines while the new system is configured, tested, and approved. Only when you are ready do you “port” the numbers over.

Advice: Do not let fear of disruption paralyse your decision-making. With the right partner, the switch is seamless.

How Red Rose Technologies Can Help

Navigating the PSTN switch off requires technical knowledge and a deep understanding of business impact. You don’t need to do it alone.

At Red Rose Technologies, we provide an end-to-end service that removes the risk and ensures your business is future-proofed. Our proven process is designed to minimise cost and disruption:

1. Comprehensive Audit & Assessment

We don’t guess; we inspect. We conduct a thorough audit of your current infrastructure to identify every PSTN or ISDN dependency – from your sales lines to your alarm systems.

2. Strategy & Solution Design

We develop a tailored transition strategy. Whether you need a full cloud migration or a hybrid solution to keep certain legacy hardware running, we design the architecture that fits your specific needs.

3. Procurement & Vendor Selection

With access to the whole market, we handle the go-to-market process for you. We help you select the right vendors for your new IP connections and VoIP systems, ensuring you get the best commercial terms.

4. Project Management & Delivery

We manage the migration from start to finish. We coordinate with providers, oversee the number porting process, and ensure staff are upskilled on the new systems.

Summary

The ISDN/PSTN switch off is inevitable, but doing it early avoids painful disruption. By auditing your systems now and partnering with experts, you can turn this mandatory update into a competitive advantage – unlocking better reliability, lower costs, and hybrid working capabilities.
